Portraits of Dallas

It’s more important to understand someone than to judge them. We think the first step to understanding someone is asking them the fundamental questions about who they are and how they became the person they are today. Understanding and empathy are essential building blocks for a better, more compassionate world. We’re incredibly fortunate to be able to ask these questions each week through our interview series. Below you’ll find inspiring interviews from in and around Dallas.

Our founder, Rachel Joy, had a vision for serving women and creating impact in our local community through a ministry model that included curriculum, restorative care, job training and job opportunities. The biggest challenge was transitioning to motherhood. I went from being an ambitious woman with goals and dreams to feeling stuck and questioning who I really am and what I really want in this new life as a mom. I recognized that I was struggling, I didn’t feel present with my daughter, and my anxiety was through the roof. That’s when I knew that I needed deeper support instead of just listening to more podcasts, reading books, and trying to figure things out on my own. Now, I know I could not have done it on my own and I’m so proud of myself for having the courage to ask for help. Read more>>

Some of the struggles start with COVID-19. This illness had scared everyone from the gym, but also scared everyone into paying attention to their health. Also false advertisements of the “perfect” body. Now we must navigate pharmaceutical drugs like GLP one and the risks that come along with doing these types of things. Read more>>

Time passed and my name was getting bigger in the events industry. This opened so many opportunities for me which included opening up my own convenience store and hosting concert events of 2,000 people. I can truly say I have worked and met almost everyone from my Oak Cliff neighborhood hood and Dallas. Now I am one of the most picked DJs to perform at expensive weddings which I have seen clients pay over 100k for their wedding. It’s a blessing for clients to trust me so much for they’re special day which in many cases it’s a one in a lifetime event for them. Read more>>

This can include (but is not limited to) complex trauma, identity exploration, depression, anxiety, relationship counseling, and political distress. We use neurodivergent affirming practices, as well as fat affirming, health at every size perspectives. We are kink/BDSM friendly and aware, and help people navigate polyamory and ethical non-monogamy. In addition, I have a soft spot in my heart for counseling men. I love walking alongside men as they discover their full spectrum of emotion, and lean into vulnerability. We offer counseling both in person and online, so if you’re interested, shoot us an email! info@azultherapies.com Read more>>

It was at one of our neighborhood meetings that I first met Scott LeMay, who was then our City Council representative and is now our current Mayor. When I learned there was an opening on the Plan Commission, I saw an opportunity to serve. As a civil engineer, I had regularly advocated for clients before similar commissions, and I felt my experience would be a strong fit. After an interview, Scott appointed me to the Commission, where I served for two and a half years. Read more>>

Opening a new business for the first time during Covid was interesting. We, as with other many small businesses, had to find unique ways to book weddings and introduce our Venue to the public. Some fun ways we were able to attract clients was to offer tours during covid and our camel was offering Covid free kisses to guest on tour. We allowed families to come out and enjoy the property, have picnics and visit all the animals. People were so excited to get out of their houses and enjoy our beautiful property. We never closed our doors and allowed wedding and events during this crazy time. Read more>>

I got introduced to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as at 17 years of age growing up in Orange County California. It immediately became a passion I knew I would do for the rest of my life. Something that tested not just physical ability but mindset, discipline, and character. Over the years, I competed, earned my black belt, and eventually started coaching. That’s when I realized how powerful this art could be, not just for me, but for anyone willing to step on the mat. Read more>>

Then, one day, I took a chance—on myself. There was a steep discount on a wedding and event planning certification through QC Event School, and I jumped on it. It was the first thing in a long time that truly sparked something in me. I started asking around for opportunities and eventually landed a job as an Event Coordinator at Aristide McKinney—a venue I used to dream about when I was just “planning” weddings for fun in high school. Read more>>

With a Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, a Master’s degree in Public Health, and over ten years of experience as a Career Tech Teacher, I learned how to educate, lead, and help others grow. The classroom taught me how to create structured opportunities. Business taught me how to take risks and build from the ground up. But it’s my passion for living well—and helping others do the same—that led me to open the doors of my own wellness space. Read more>>

Bringing a fresh brand to Texas—especially to a fitness-savvy city like Dallas—meant we had to hit the ground sprinting. We weren’t just introducing ourselves; we were making a case for why we belonged in a city already packed with options. It took time to find our footing, stand out, and build trust in a new market, but every challenge helped us grow stronger, scrappier, and more committed to our mission. Read more>>

One of the biggest challenges has been dealing with imposter syndrome. Even with years of experience, that little voice of doubt still tries to creep in. I am very confident as an instructor, but at the studio owner level, it is a battle. So every time someone walks into the studio feeling unsure or timid, and then leaves glowing with confidence and a big smile on their face, it reminds me exactly why I do this. Read more>>

By her early twenties, the many years of rigorous training and rehearsal resulted in a chronic repetitive use injury—Achilles tendonitis. She experienced persistent pain and inflammation, compounded by musculoskeletal imbalances that had gone unaddressed. Frustrated and discouraged, Lindy began an intensive study of the classical Pilates method. She was amazed by how quickly and effectively Pilates alleviated inflammation—not only in her tendon, but throughout her joints. Equally powerful were the positive mental benefits Pilates provided. Feeling physically and mentally rejuvenated, Lindy decided to dedicate herself to teaching and sharing her passion for Pilates with others. Read more>>

My journey started with a simple conviction: that ideas, when rooted in truth and crafted with intention, can shape culture. I’ve always seen the world through the lens of connection—how people, stories, systems, and spirit all work together to impact lives. Over the years, I’ve launched and led creative projects that reflect that belief. Read more>>

However, as our operation expanded, we ran into a persistent challenge: sourcing quality grooming supplies locally. In the vast Dallas-Fort Worth area, we discovered there were only two brick-and-mortar grooming supply shops—both located in the greater Fort Worth region. Between limited local options and the frequent frustrations of dealing with big-box online retailers, it became clear that the industry was missing something. Read more>>

I came to the US almost 30 years ago with the desire to create a better life for myself and my young son, who at that point was 6months old. I was in a horrible and, dare I say dangerous, marriage that thankfully ended in divorce when my son was 2. I clawed my way out of debt and bought a new house with the determination to create a life of opportunities for my son, something I believe I didn’t have growing up in England and Germany. Read more>>

Absolutely. Family of Five was really born from lived experience—mine and my husband Adrian’s. We both grew up in South Central Los Angeles, in neighborhoods where survival sometimes felt like the only goal. By our early 20s, we were married with three little ones, trying to figure out how to build a life while carrying the weight of financial pressure, limited resources, and all the emotions that come with not having a clear path forward. We were exhausted—but we also had a deep faith and an even deeper belief that our story wasn’t over. Read more>>

I literally didn’t even let myself think about it, I just signed up for it. I knew if I overthought, I’d worry about what people would think if I became a tattoo artist because I didn’t “look” like a traditional tattoo artist. I wanted a job that would allow me to make my own schedule so I could stay home with my son during the day, but I could work evenings, and having an art background, this felt like the perfect fit. Once I took the course, I was shocked how quickly I picked up tattooing and how quickly my business grew. I feel like there are not a lot of places where women can go in to get a cutesy little tattoo and feel comfortable, and that really is the why behind my business. Read more>>

My journey began in the vibrant south of Mexico, a place steeped in culture and resilience but marked by hardship. Growing up, creative arts were my sanctuary,a way to make sense of the world. Life was far from easy, but everything changed when my sister, already living in Dallas, gifted us a VHS camera. At 16, I held it for the first time, peered through its lens, and discovered magic. The dusty streets of my hometown, the laughter at festivals, and the faces of my community transformed into stories I could preserve forever. Read more>>

The growing popularity of injectables to “erase” signs of aging raised concerns for me. These quick-fix solutions often hit the market before the long-term effects are fully understood. I saw an opportunity to offer something different: a all-embracing, healthy-skin approach that empowers clients to age gracefully and confidently without resorting to invasive procedures. My goal has always been to help clients feel beautiful in their skin – whether they’re teens battling acne, adults navigating hormonal changes or simply embracing their evolving appearance. Healthy skin is beautiful skin, and confidence starts with feeling good about yourself. Read more>>

Two experiences from my higher ed career were especially instrumental in shaping my entrepreneurial journey. Out of that came 333matcha — our dreamy matcha pop-up and beverage concept. It’s been a mix of experimentation, late nights, and a lot of learning along the way, but we’ve grown by staying rooted in what feels true to us: calm, connection, creativity, and care. Read more>>

I was introduced to cameras and learned more about directors that charged the films that I grew to love. Somewhere along the way, my passion for photography and filmmaking strengthened and I was more sure than ever. Looking for a fresh start, I moved to Texas and continued my law enforcement career. It was here that I really noticed the growing disconnect between police and the communities we serve. Social media was just starting to take off, and I saw its untapped potential. When department policy forced us to stop after a misunderstanding, the public outcry showed me just how much people valued authentic, direct communication from their police. Read more>>

I couldn’t fathom the thought of being away from my son everyday, so my husband told me verbatim “start your photography business. Just do it. Put your two weeks in and do it.” So that’s what I did.
